Don't screenshot the moving frame. Pause at the moment the bottle faces the camera most squarely, use the frame-by-frame scrub if the app offers it, and screenshot the cleanest single frame. Videos compress color and detail aggressively, so favor the frame where the label text is largest — a close-up during application beats a wide vanity shot. On a friend's vanity
This is the easy one: you control the camera. Turn the bottle label-forward, move it near a window or under the whitest light in the room, and shoot straight-on from eight to twelve inches away. Take one extra photo of the bottom of the bottle — the base sticker usually carries the shade code and sometimes the full product name. Two seconds of effort, and the identification goes from probable to certain.
On a store shelf
Shelf photos fail for one reason: everything is small. Instead of capturing the whole wall of foundations, zoom with your feet — photograph the single bottle you care about, close enough that its label fills a good share of the frame. Watch for glare; glass bottles under retail spotlights throw reflections that can blank out exactly the text you need. A slight angle change kills the glare without hiding the label.

When the packaging is partial — or missing
Real photos are rarely tidy. Here's how to work with what you have, in descending order of difficulty:
- Label visible but blurry. Try identification anyway — logos and bottle shapes survive blur far better than fine print does. If the product comes back confidently but the shade doesn't, you've still done the hard half; the brand's shade range is now a short, browsable list.
- Label turned away. Shape, cap, pump, and glass tint may be enough for a distinctive bottle. Expect a lower confidence score, and treat the result as a strong lead to verify rather than a final answer.
- Bottle visible, shade code hidden. This is the most common partial result: right product, unknown shade. If it's a video, keep scrubbing — creators often name the shade aloud or show the base once. Otherwise, match the visible liquid color against the brand's range, or better, skip the guessing and match the shade to your skin instead (more on that below).
- No packaging at all. A photo of foundation already blended on someone's face can't be traced to a product — worn makeup reflects their skin, their skin prep, and the lighting as much as the formula. No honest tool claims otherwise. The productive move is to stop identifying their product and start identifying your shade of whatever look you admired.
